An Introduction

Welcome to depths of Transfinite Sorcery. Here shall I henceforth present you with my wild musings on the nature of reality, mathematics, infinity, philosophy, magic, the future of humanity and my quest for world domination! Yes, you read me - WORLD DOMINATION! Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

[Insert Ominous Tower And Menacing Clouds]

Actually, there won't really be any world domination. I know, that's probably coming as a bummer. If so, sorry for the letdown. There will be plenty of the other stuff though.

So why the subject matter? To start with, I am a mathematician by training and am in love with the subject. To some this might seem strange as the very mention of mathematics for many evokes disgust, despise, fear, anger, hives, boils, seizures, spontaneous combustion and so on. This is largely, I believe, because of our public education system and the horrid manner in which mathematics is presented to students. It takes w while, but once you get to the upper division math, things start to get interesting and the rabbit hole swallows you up. I have, more times than I can count, had conversations with people about math and science which have left them with a sense of wonder and awe for these subjects, and in some cases, wishes that they had found it sooner so that they might have studied them. Mathematics and science are beautiful subjects that have been painted in a dull and stale light. I wish to paint them more fairly, bring them back to life and reconnect them to the very magical nature of the universe.

As for the name of the blog, the point when I came to truly understand the depth, power and beauty of mathematics was in college when I started taking a upper division math program. The class quite literally blew my mind. The tipping point for me was in set theory when we learned about a framework for thinking about different "sizes" of infinity. As it turns out, if you think about the concept of size the right way, there are so many infinitely many sizes of infinity that there is no "size" big enough to describe how many there are! I have never been the same since I learned this. Of all pieces of knowledge that I have gleaned over the years this remains for me one of the most beautiful, mystical and profound. It is honor of this that I name this blog Transfinite Sorcery. May it have as profound an effect on you as studying the transfinite did for me.

Cheers.
